ExxonMobil is an energy multinational corporation with operations around the globe from Europe to America and Asia to Africa. Its core businesses are include downstream, upstream, chemical, transportation and alternative energy. They are still manage downstream and alternative energy operations in Indonesia. The company still have considerable influence and power although their name rarely mentioned in local news today.
The corporation claimed to be the largest and most profitable petroleum company in the world only rivaled by Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) and British Petroleum (BP). They manage and coordinate their downstream and upstream business, include owned tanker ships network for distribute their petroleum and product around the world. In addition, ExxonMobil is company who aggressively expand their operation into area where even their rival company dare to challenge to explore it due local or sovereignty issue as long it has prospect oil & gas deposit.
ExxonMobil was direct descendant of Standard Oil Company (1870) managed by John D. Rockefeller. Standard Oil was later broken into several petroleum companies, include Exxon, Chevron, Mobil and Esso. Exxon and Mobil corporation were operated independent and as rival in petroleum business with their own specialty operation and businesses goal although they had same origin company.
Nevertheless, those competition ended when management of Exxon and Mobil corporation decided to merge their operation and business back into single corporation in 1998. The merger event claimed to be the largest reunion merger of companies in United States petroleum and business history. The merger goal was to expand company operation around the globe, provide more human resources for their operation, maximize resources for research and development of energy extraction and due their similarity business policy.
The new corporation is rename ExxonMobil corporation.
As mentioned above, ExxonMobil is oil & gas company who operate upstream business. It is active company who explore and develop oil & gas extraction around the world, include in Indonesia. ExxonMobil is an aggressive corporation who willing take risk to explore and develop oil & gas operation in turmoil or unpopular region due instability local government or local sovereignty. They gained foothold in area where even their rival don’t dare to challenge to explore oil & gas deposit so when peace situation return normal the company can maximize their operation outflanking their rival company.
ExxonMobil also manage and operate downstream operation around the world. They owned 37 refineries and petroleum plants located in 21 countries with its distribution network. The refineries also produce various strategic and important chemical products for other industries. It makes ExxonMobil to be the largest refiner company in the world.
The company in order to support their upstream and downstream network around the world owned and coordinate fleet of oil & gas tanker ships. The subsidiary company who manage ExxonMobil tanker ship is named ExxonMobil Marine.
ExxonMobil also operated gas station chain in Europe, America and Australia. In Australia, they more well known as Mobil gas station chain which compete against British Petroleum (BP), Chevron and other local gas station chains. Nevertheless, ExxonMobil most oil & gas production are transporting overseas to be refined before shipping back into Indonesia due Indonesia law regulate all petroleum product require to be sold through PERTAMINA company for Indonesia domestic distribution.
ExxonMobil has active downstream operation in Indonesia, particularly, Sumatera island. They still held concession right to explore and develop Aceh field area, which well known as A block and it’s neighboring areas. The company still quietly operate in the area and looks like waiting for opportunity and new oil & gas deposit discovery rise.
In addition, the company also held several exploration & developing concession right in Indonesia archipelago, such as, Surunama & Mandar basin in Celebes (Sulawesi island) and Cendrawasih basin in West Papua. They have exploration and extraction offshore operation in Natuna D-Alpha block at Natuna island and onshore operation at Cepu and Gunting block at Java island.
ExxonMobil manage explore and develop coalbed methane extraction as alternative energy in Borneo island. The company saw opportunity for extraction of coalbed methane gas as potential clean and abundant energy for replacing oil energy which depleted in near future. Coalbed methane gas is same like natural gas only it extracted in coal deposit through drilling method.
